I am not a parent, but I am a fairy god-librarian to some pretty awesome kids. Pandemic 2020 has been a weird year for all of us, and the one thing that’s gotten most of us through it has been the world wide web. While most kids have been receiving some sort of “official” online learning experience this year, more often than not there is a lot of “unofficial” online learning going on as well.
YouTube.
There has been a lot of YouTube-ing.
I really love YouTube. Personally, I’ve been really into travel videos this year because, well, you know.
My fairy god-patrons have also been excitedly tuning in, and I’ve heard from more than one family, on more than one continent, that YouTube colloquialisms are starting to show up in every day jargon.
It starts off slow… after narrating the step-by-step instructions while baking cookies, an extroverted kiddo says, “Thanks for watching guys! Don’t forget to subscribe to my channel!” Another borrows their mom’s phone and records teaching the dog a new trick, and asks to her to upload it later.
These kids are so sweet, so funny, and of course their family and friends would be impressed with their broadcasting skills and excited to see what they’ve been up to in quarantine.
But what if you don’t want the rest of the world tuning in too?
Never fear, the Library Lady is here to help.
In my new YouTube video, I’ll talk you through how to set up a kid-friendly, “secret” YouTube channel. This is an easy and fun way to make a legitimate YouTube channel where you get to be in control of your audience by setting the video visibility to unlisted or private. The name, description, and profile picture of the channel will be visible to the public and still might show up in searches; however, if all of the videos you upload are unlisted or private, the channel itself will look empty and the videos themselves will not show up in searches.
I’m currently working on Part 2, where I’ll go over how to create your private network, your invitation-only audience, so that you can share with only the viewers you approve.
So start creating kids! I can’t wait to hear all about how you are YouTube famous… amongst your own grown-up approved circle of friends.
